Meet Sancho – From Fear to Hope
Background
He was first discovered during a spay campaign in the local area in August 2025, when the shelter team noticed a poor-looking dog alone on the streets. As they approached, they realised there were several dogs hiding under a car, seeking shelter from heavy rain — Sancho was one of them.
The dogs were extremely hungry and cautiously came closer when offered food. Drawn by the promise of safety and a meal, they entered the cage willingly. When the door closed, Sancho panicked briefly, overwhelmed by fear, before freezing completely and withdrawing from all contact. This moment marked the beginning of his journey toward safety — and healing. Sancho is around 10 years old.
Personality
Sancho is a deeply sensitive, quiet soul who experiences the world with great caution. In the shelter, he initially kept his distance, avoiding eye contact, trembling during loud noises, and choosing stillness as a way to cope. He never showed aggression — only fear — and preferred to remain unnoticed.
Since moving into foster care, Sancho has made steady, heart-warming progress. At first, he stayed curled on his bed, observing quietly. Over time, curiosity gently emerged: he began watching the world through the window, listening to outside sounds, and eventually choosing to rest near his foster carer. He now sleeps peacefully nearby and is learning to eat in the same room, keeping a distance that feels safe to him.
Sancho lives harmoniously alongside cats, showing no concern even when they move around him or approach his food. He is calm, observant, and thoughtful by nature. Touch is still something he is learning to enjoy, but recent updates show that he is beginning to accept gentle petting — a huge milestone for him.
He has learned to wear a harness and now walks comfortably with it on. Outdoors, he prefers quiet observation, sitting calmly and watching the world pass by. He handles nail trims and baths with patience and cooperation, even when unsure, showing how much he wants to try despite his fears.
Home Required
Sancho is looking for a calm, patient, and emotionally intuitive home — one that understands that trust cannot be rushed. He has never lived in a traditional home before, and everyday experiences will continue to be new for him.
His future family should be committed to positive, reward-based training and counter conditioning to help him feel comfortable in new situations. Also reading and respecting his communication signals, offering calm interactions and allowing him to build trust at his own pace.
