Background

Barney was rescued from a local pound in June 2025. When first seen there, he stood quietly at the bars, calmly observing the world from a distance. At around 9 years old, it is likely that Barney was owned before he ended up at the pound. Whatever his past looked like, it’s clear he is now learning how to feel safe and understood again. Since his rescue, Barney has been settling into the shelter, where his true personality is slowly beginning to shine through.

Personality

Barney is a truly endearing boy who forms deep, meaningful bonds with people he trusts. With familiar faces, he is affectionate and expressive—nuzzling into legs, placing his head into waiting hands, and actively seeking closeness. He has a joyful, playful side too, often greeting people with enthusiasm and happy energy.
On walks, Barney truly shines. He willingly allows his harness to be put on and is excited to head outside. Once out, he loves exploring with his nose, following scents, sniffing the grass, and taking in his surroundings. While he can feel unsure if unfamiliar dogs rush toward him, he quickly relaxes when his handler offers calm support and guidance, showing how responsive and connected he can be.

Home Required

Barney will need a patient, understanding home that appreciates senior dogs and is willing to guide him gently as he adjusts to life outside the shelter. He has never lived in a home environment as we know it, so everything—from doors and household noises to routines—will be new to him. Positive reinforcement, counter-conditioning, and calm, consistent handling will be essential to help him feel safe and confident.

An experienced, adult-only home or one with dog-savvy older teenagers would suit Barney best. Careful management around food and introductions to other dogs will be important, ideally with ongoing support from a behaviourist.
